When it is completed, you will find that " Mountain Top Wonders" presents a number of the seldom seen treasures of the back country, including rock outcroppings, caves, various quarries, wetlands and other areas that deserve description outside of their respective screen areas. This area is currently under early construction. "Explore Ferguson Hollow" Tour the stream on which Ferguson Mill was once located. The mill was the legendary destination of Betty Knocks, as she drove her oxen with a load of grain to be ground and taken back to her home over in the Yough River Valley. This stream is a tributary to Gist Run. "Tour Gist Run" Has not been completed. I plan to add this tour in the spring of 2001. This is the stream that passes under Peachin's Market. It drains the western limits of the Dunbar Creek Watershed. "Dunbar Town" displays some of the town's landmarks. "On To The Yough" traces the streams course from town to its confluence with the Youghiogheny river. This section also includes a visit to the old Dunbar railroad yards. "From The Quarry To Town" continues the trek downward through the areas most heavily damaged by industrial enterprise. "Irishtown Run" shows portions of a stream that is almost inaccessible, due to the presence of some of the densest laurel thickets I have ever seen. The present tour includes visits to the Dunbar Quarry Caves and Dwarf Forrest. The route up the stream is NOT a recommended hike. Stick to the road when exploring this area. This tour will be expanded to include the area from Twin Oak Road to Irishtown and beyond later this year. "Tour Paved Road Section" catalogs the area from Tucker Run to the Quarry, which is the lower end of the CRFFO Area. "Elk Rock Run" Has not been completed. This is the stream that flows past the Game Commission Rifle Range. Elk Rock Run is one of the shorter primary tributaries of Dunbar Creek. I plan to complete this tour in the spring of 2001. "Tucker Run Neighbors" Has not been completed. The tour will follow this Dunbar tributary from the game shed, up past a number of homes, to its sources. I plan to complete this tour in the spring of 2001. "Dirt Road Section" covers from the lot at the end of the dirt road down to the confluence of Tucker Run (near the Game Commission Building). "Limestone Run" has some of the most unique geologic / stream features of any Dunbar tributary. This tour visits several of them I plan to update this tour in the spring of 2001. "Climb Zebley Run" follows Limestone Run's highest gradient tributary. Lots of waterfalls here and some interesting plant colonies as well. Coming SOON! "Little Piney Run" is a tributary of Glade Run. This stream also has lots of waterfalls and a turkey vulture rookery. Little Piney is one of the AMR sites. "Big Piney Run" is another Glade Run Tributary which also has waterfalls and an AMR Site. "Getting Lost on Rock Run" visits one of the most remote streams in the Dunbar / Glade Run Watershed. However, the head waters of this stream have been extensively clear cut, so visits to its headwater provide an excellent opportunity to watch succession in action. (VERY DIFFICULT HIKING!) "Glade Run Adventure" presents Dunbar Creeks largest tributary, a very rugged and secluded area with disappearing trails. and merciless climbs through stream spackled boulders. This is a 12 hour beat your body on the rocks climb through some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen. "Upper Dunbar" covers from the parking lot at the end of the dirt road, to the top of the mountain and back via Dunbar and Little Dunbar Creek. Clicking on the center image will start you on the "Upper Dunbar" tour. "Visit Laurel Run" Has not been completed. I plan to add a tour of this Gist Run tributary in the spring of 2001. |
