Dim Passage From Entrance To
Vertical Entrance |
|
Quarry Cave #2 is not as tall or wide as Quarry Cave # 1, but
it extends much further back into the mountain. There
are two entrances to this cave. The main one is
horizontal with a floor sloping upward into the
mountain. The second entrance is a vertical one that you
might mistake for a cave-in, but it is not. This opening
was cut to allow compressed air and water lines to enter the
large cavern. Over the many years since the quarry
closed, a pile of debris has formed from small falls of rock
and dirt from the walls of the vertical entrance. There
are a few small trees growing from the pile. The opening
gives a surreal impression of an island of light and the
surface surrounded by the sea of darkness in the depths of the cave.
Because of the air flow through the two large openings, the
area between them does not have constant temperature, but
rather exhibits a lag in temperature. Thus, when all has
thawed outside in the spring, the frozen ice flow and icicles
remain for quite a while and when the outside first freezes,
the interior water remains liquid.
If you visit in the winter, beware that the ice-flows are
quite slippery.
