The comparatively gentle gradient
continues as we pass Raven Roost and approach Big Piney Run.
This is the only place I have ever observed Ravens in south
western Pennsylvania. What a treat! Big Piney
Run has been
another of the major acid pollution contributors to the
Glade and Dunbar Watersheds. An alkali sand project
has been placed along the upper reaches of Big Piney Run
like its smaller downstream sibling Little Piney and its
parent Glade. The
effects of the project have been promising. Big Piney
Run is another extreme gradient stream with beautiful water
falls and cascades along a 100 foot drop over a 1/4 mile run
as it approaches Glade Run. In its upper reaches, Big
Piney is a very low gradient stream with thick laurel
thickets along its banks. The sand project is in the
low gradient section.
